Google began rolling out Gemini to the Google TV Streamer on Monday, replacing Google Assistant with a smarter, more conversational AI experience. The company says this upgrade allows users to talk naturally to their TV to find shows, movies, and much more.
With Gemini, users can ask for movie suggestions in a conversational way. For instance, someone might say, “I like dramas but my wife likes comedies. What’s a movie we can watch together?” and Gemini will provide suitable recommendations. They can also catch up on their favorite shows by asking, “What happened at the end of Outlander last season?” or stay updated with trends by asking, “What’s the new hospital drama everyone’s talking about?”
Google says Gemini does far more than just entertainment. Like the mobile version, it answers a wide range of questions. Families can turn the TV into a learning tool by asking Gemini to “Explain why volcanoes erupt to my third grader,” or use it for practical guidance like cooking or DIY tutorials through YouTube videos.
Users can access Gemini on the Google TV Streamer simply by pressing the microphone button on their remote. Google confirmed that the update will roll out to users aged 18 and older over the next few weeks.
The rollout follows Google’s earlier introduction of Gemini for select TCL Google TV devices in September. The company had announced plans to bring Gemini to 2025 Hisense U7, U8, and UX models, as well as TCL QM7K, QM8K, and X11K models. Gemini has also made its way to the Walmart Onn 4K Pro streaming device, expanding its reach beyond Google’s own hardware.
This update aligns with Google’s broader plan to phase out Google Assistant and replace it with Gemini across all its devices and platforms. The company had already previewed this transition at CES in January, signaling that Gemini would become the new standard for Google TV this year. By introducing Gemini to its TV ecosystem, Google aims to make the experience more intuitive, interactive, and integrated with everyday living.
