WhatsApp is rolling out its own version of a text-based status update, similar to Instagram Notes. Users can now post short messages that others can easily see, making it a quick way to share what you’re doing, how you’re feeling, or anything you want people to know at the moment. The company also encourages users to treat the space as a way to spark conversations or explain why they may not be available to chat.
WhatsApp explains that this feature, now called “About,” isn’t entirely new. It was actually the app’s very first feature before it shifted its focus toward private, secure messaging. With this relaunch, WhatsApp is making the About status far more visible. Your update will appear at the top of one-on-one chats and on user profiles, giving it more prominence than before. Anyone who sees your About status can tap it and reply directly, making interactions quicker and more personal.

The About status disappears after 24 hours by default, just like Instagram Notes. However, users can adjust the duration if they want it to vanish sooner or stay visible longer. They can also choose who gets to see it—whether only their contacts or a broader audience.
Right now, the feature is simpler than Instagram Notes, which supports short looping videos and even lets people share the music they’re listening to. WhatsApp may explore similar additions depending on how widely users adopt the feature.
The new About status is rolling out to mobile users this week.
