The African Digital Economy and Inclusivity Conference (AFDEIC) is set to take place in Abuja, Nigeria, from August 12 to 14, 2025, bringing together business executives, government officials, and experts to delve into the future of Africa’s digital economy. The conference, under the theme “AI and Africa’s Digital Economy: Leaving No One Behind,” will focus on the role of artificial intelligence and other technologies in driving Africa’s anticipated $180 billion digital economy by 2025.
Key topics will include expanding digital infrastructure, boosting financial inclusion, and promoting AI adoption across the continent. A major challenge to be discussed is the digital divide, with rural areas facing limited access to internet services. Currently, 73% of the African population remains without reliable connectivity, which limits access to e-commerce and digital financial services.
Nigeria’s digital economy transformation will be a highlight of the discussions, with a focus on the government’s efforts to increase broadband access, expand e-commerce, and enhance digital financial services.
Adedayo Oketola, the Team Lead for AFDEIC, emphasized the urgency of addressing Africa’s digital infrastructure gaps, particularly in rural regions where millions are still unable to access essential digital services. He noted that AFDEIC 2025 would be a pivotal opportunity for stakeholders to engage with policymakers and explore AI’s potential for economic inclusion.
The conference will also spotlight AI’s applications in various sectors, from healthcare to agriculture and education. However, Oketola acknowledged the challenges, including limited computing resources, data privacy issues, and the risk of deepening inequalities, which must be addressed to ensure equitable AI adoption.
Cybersecurity will be another critical theme at AFDEIC, with experts discussing how to safeguard Africa’s digital economy from cyber threats. Oketola called for stronger legal frameworks, capacity building for cybersecurity professionals, and greater awareness to protect the continent’s growing digital landscape.
Adetoun Tade, the marketing lead for AFDEIC, pointed out that the African digital landscape is rapidly evolving, with technologies like AI, mobile payments, and blockchain reshaping industries. AFDEIC will be a prime venue for those looking to stay ahead of these transformative trends and ensure Africa’s future digital prosperity.
